Style Guide


Oriire is an African Heritage platform that spotlights African history, African food and African myths. These core areas can be promoted in various literary forms ranging from articles, to short stories and poems, videos and photography. Therefore, it is important to note that all articles, poems, short stories, art works submitted for publication on Oriire must reflect the core themes; African history, food or myth.

This style guide is designed to ensure uniformity in the quality and context of Oriire contents. This guide will be categorized according to the type of submissions expected.


ARTICLES

Language:
Articles should be written in English. In case there are quotations or texts within the article that is written in any other African language, it should be translated afterwards.

Length: 1000 – 3000 words

Font size: 12

Font style: Times New Roman

Justification: Fully Justify

Line spacing: 1.5

Referencing style: Chicago Manual Style (CMS) (16th edition); endnotes. All articles must be properly referenced.

Originality: All submitted articles will be subjected to a plagiarism check. Plagiarism must not exceed 25%. Already published articles will not be considered for publication.

Accessibility: The content of articles should be comprehensible to a well-informed reader outside the field. This means (a) that the texture should not be too technical, and (b) that the arguments and linkages between them should be clear.

STORIES

Length:
Not exceeding 4000 words

Font size: 12

Font style: Times New Roman

Justification: Fully Justify

Line spacing: 1.5

Accessibility: The content of articles should be comprehensible to a well-informed reader outside the field. This means (a) that the texture should not be too technical, and (b) that the arguments and linkages between them should be clear.

Originality: Stories must be original works of the author that submitted them. It can either be a fiction, folktale, a true story but it must have an African theme. Already published stories, novels or books will not be considered for submission.

POETRY

Length:
Not exceeding 600 words

Font size: 12

Font style: Times New Roman

Justification: The poet is free to determine the justification that best fits the poem.

Line spacing: 1.5

Theme: Poems to be considered for publication on Oriire must generally depict an African theme.

Originality: Poems must be original works of the poet that submitted them. Already published poems will not be considered for submission.

Clarity and conciseness: Poems should be easy to follow and not extremely complicated. The theme should be concise and easy to follow. It is expected that syntaxes, arguments and linkages between stanzas and sections of the poem should be clear.

IMAGES/ART

Theme:
Images or artworks to be considered for publication on Oriire must generally depict an African theme. In other words, it must showcase African history, African myth or African food.

Originality: Images must be originally taken by the photographer who submitted it. Art works such as paintings and drawings must be the original works of the artist who submitted them.

Clarity and quality: Images and art works must be in high definition quality. The theme which the content depicts must be clear enough for the audience to interpret. A description of the piece can also be submitted to be included in the publication.

Format: JPEG or PNG.
