Formatting Guide

Last Updated: August 20, 2025

Thank you for contributing to the Oriire archive. To ensure your story is presented beautifully and is easy for our audience to read, please use the following formatting tools directly in our submission editor.

1. Structuring Your Article (Headings)

Proper structure is key to a readable article. Please do not use the H1 heading; your main article title is set automatically.

  • H2 - Main Section Headings: Use H2 for the primary sections of your article. Your piece should have at least two H2 headings to guide the reader.
  • H3 - Subheadings: Use H3 to break down topics within a larger H2 section.
  • Heading Capitalization: Please use Title Case for all headings (e.g., The Mythology of the Yoruba People).

2. Formatting Your Text

  • Bold: Use bold for strong emphasis on key terms, but please use it sparingly.
  • Italics: Use italics for titles of books, and for subtle emphasis.
  • Blockquotes: For direct quotations that are longer than two lines, please use the blockquote feature.

3. Adding Images

If you are uploading images with your submission:

  • Captions & Credits: All images must have a caption explaining their relevance. If the image is not your own, you must provide a credit to the artist or source.
  • Alt Text: Please provide descriptive Alt Text for every image. This is essential for our visually impaired readers. In the Alt Text field, simply describe what is in the image.

4. Citing Your Sources

Academic rigor is important to us. Please use the Chicago Manual of Style (CMS) for all citations.

  • Endnotes: Since we are on the web, please format your citations as endnotes. Create a final H2 section at the end of your article titled "Notes". Under this heading, use a numbered list to correspond with the superscript numbers in your text.
