Small forest spirits believed to guard nature and sacred places. Known to mislead travelers, they can cause illness or misfortune to those who disrespect the land. Though primarily from Mesoamerican folklore, Chaneques are sometimes linked to Afro-Mexican oral traditions, showing cultural blending.
